This is further to Doha 14 of Aranya Kand in Ramcharit manas of Tulsidas which we covered in the last post.

Shri Ram responding to discreet inquiry made by Lakshman by saying, “O Taat (my young brother), I will explain it all to you in a brief manner and you should be ready to listen to what I say with open mind remaining intellectually present and ready to absorb it for enriching your inner conscience.

“The whole idea of ‘I’ and ‘mine’, ‘you’ and ‘your’ in its its limited sense is the root cause of illusion (Maya), which holds its sway over the entire range of beings. Besides it the senses and whatever is seen and perceived by senses and is absorbed by mind is also Maya (the unreal).

“You may now know the division of that ‘Maya’ which has two parts known as Vidya Maya (the power of knowledge) and Avidya Maya (the spell of ignorance that keeps confused). Of these two, one is vile, a terribly upsetting force under influence of which the Jeevas (beings) fall in the trap called the world. But one of these is that power which creates this world and has control over Gunas (three kind of orientation known as Sattva, Rajas and Tamas) but you must also know that this power is power that belongs to Supreme Lord only and is guided by Him without enjoying any independent liberty.

“Those who have dropped egoistic pride totally and therefore begin to see presence of the same Supreme Reality in all alike i e consider every thing and being as the manifestation of the Lord Himself. Such people only can really be called as ‘Viraagi’ i e dispassionate and totally balanced in their views and approach and such people only can reject any command and claim over supernatural powers that might be acquired through some means treating such power as good as a blade of grass only and also remain unaffected by the three Gunas that force the ordinary people in to any kind of action with selfish purpose.

“The Jeeva are a such being who do not know Ishwara (God), its Maya and neither know who they themselves really are (because if they have knowledge about these they will be one with the Lord only) and Shiva (God), who controls the Maya as its guide and is source of entire power of ‘Maya’, liberates or keeps in bondage according to what the Jeevas deserve  as a result of their ‘actions’ (over which Jeevas are supposed to have control over).”

(Shri Ram here referred Gos as Shiva because he did not wish to lay stress on the fact that He was that God Himself and let Shiva be that God. It is also to understood as a fact that Shiva and Ram are not different, Shiva is Lord of Universe and exercises all powers of Ram, and Ram is Lord of all universes.)

We have now covered up to Doha 15 of Aranya Kand.
