भगति जोग सुनि अति सुख पावा। लछिमन प्रभु चरनन्हि सिरु नावा।।
एहि बिधि गए कछुक दिन बीती। कहत बिराग ग्यान गुन नीती।।
सूपनखा रावन कै बहिनी। दुष्ट हृदय दारुन जस अहिनी।।
पंचबटी सो गइ एक बारा। देखि बिकल भइ जुगल कुमारा।।
भ्राता पिता पुत्र उरगारी। पुरुष मनोहर निरखत नारी।।
होइ बिकल सक मनहि न रोकी। जिमि रबिमनि द्रव रबिहि बिलोकी।।
रुचिर रुप धरि प्रभु पहिं जाई। बोली बचन बहुत मुसुकाई।।
तुम्ह सम पुरुष न मो सम नारी। यह सँजोग बिधि रचा बिचारी।।
मम अनुरूप पुरुष जग माहीं। देखेउँ खोजि लोक तिहु नाहीं।।
ताते अब लगि रहिउँ कुमारी। मनु माना कछु तुम्हहि निहारी।।

This is further to Doha 16 of Aranya Kand in Ramcharit Manas of Tulsidas which we covered in the last post.

Lakshman felt very elated up on having his queries regarding Yoga and Bhakti etc answered by Shri Ram to his entire satisfaction and bowed at the feet of the Lord to express his gratitude.Many such days passed when Lakshman routinely raised doubts and Shri Ram explained to him matters related to dispassion, knowledge, the modes and moods, and the right approaches to it (here we should gather that these matters are not understood in a single sitting but one should be ready to get the real idea about these established in mind by pondering and regularly clearing doubts without any hitch by raising them before an enlightened master).

There was one woman known as Suupnakha (big nailed); she was sister of the demon King Ravana. By her very nature she was very vile and evil minded like a female serpent always ready to bite and spit venom. Once she went to visit Panchvati and there she found the two brothers who looked young and became restless after developing a liking for them. Kakbhushudi said to Garuda that she was one of those women who can’t resist after coming to see a charming and handsome man without even considering whether it is right to develop a  passion oriented relationship with him; her behavior is like that of a sun-stone which melts as soon as it comes in contact with sun rays.

Supanakha then wore attractive make up and approached the Lord and began to talk while smiling excessively and said, “there is none so charming as you and as me in the entire wold and my meeting you is planned therefore by the creator with purpose. On my part also I have tried to find a man as good as me but found none in entire world, leave apart the world I have searched him in all the three Lokas (worlds) but without success. I am still a virgin on that account but here I find my heart accepting you after I have eyed you with appreciation.”

(Supanakha, though totally showing her cheap interest, also said factually correct things about Shri Ram that He is the most charming and none is as beautiful as Him in the entire universe and beyond. It is also right that it is rare for a person of bad character to have the form of Lord appear right in front for having a decent look at Him unless the lord Himself has graciously given a nod for it. She had also spoken falsely that she was young and a virgin as in fact she was a widow.)

सीतहि चितइ कही प्रभु बाता। अहइ कुआर मोर लघु भ्राता।।
गइ लछिमन रिपु भगिनी जानी। प्रभु बिलोकि बोले मृदु बानी।।
सुंदरि सुनु मैं उन्ह कर दासा। पराधीन नहिं तोर सुपासा।।
प्रभु समर्थ कोसलपुर राजा। जो कछु करहिं उनहि सब छाजा।।
सेवक सुख चह मान भिखारी। ब्यसनी धन सुभ गति बिभिचारी।।
लोभी जसु चह चार गुमानी। नभ दुहि दूध चहत ए प्रानी।।
पुनि फिरि राम निकट सो आई। प्रभु लछिमन पहिं बहुरि पठाई।।
लछिमन कहा तोहि सो बरई। जो तृन तोरि लाज परिहरई।।
तब खिसिआनि राम पहिं गई। रूप भयंकर प्रगटत भई।।
सीतहि सभय देखि रघुराई। कहा अनुज सन सयन बुझाई।।
दो0-लछिमन अति लाघवँ सो नाक कान बिनु कीन्हि।
ताके कर रावन कहँ मनौ चुनौती दीन्हि।।17।।

Lord Shri Ram first through a glance towards Sita (indicating that He belonged to Sita and none other without having to verbally spurn Supanakha) and then told by way of introduction (showing respect to her and not be curt), “this young man sitting here is my younger brother and might be available.”

Taking the cue Supanakha went to Lakshman who could gather  that she was sister of the enemy (of the world i e demon King Ravana) and therefore he looked in direction of the Lord (avoiding to look at a strange woman like a gentleman) before speaking in sweet tone the words, “O Beautiful One, please know that I am His servant, and for a person who is not his own master it is not possible to enjoy or entertain you (for such deviations do not allow one to justify assumed role of a servant,particularly for the servant of the Lord).

“The Lord, who is king of Kaushala, however has that freedom and whatever He pleases to do is alright for Him (because as Lord He prefers to take care of the wishes of His devotees). A servant looking for his own enjoyment is like a beggar looking to be honorable, a person who indulges in vices looking to save his money, a person promiscuous by nature looking for salvation, a greedy person looking for good name and an arrogant person looking for being known as cultured person; they all are looking for some thing impossible as accomplishment like some one trying to milch the sky for milk.”

Supanakha now turned back to Shri Ram with expectation but the Lord once again sent her back to Lakshman (signaling that first learn from Lakshman to be dispassionate before having any thing to do with Him).

Lakshman then told her (not mincing words now), “only such person can woo you who has forgotten decency of all kind.”

She, now hurt and badly annoyed, went back again to Shri Ram and displayed her terrible real self; Raghuraj Shri Ram noted that Sita was now scared hence signaled Lakshman to treat her in the manner needed.

With alacrity Lakshman chopped off her nose and ears (in fact she had already lost her nose i e respect and she also had no ears practically with which to listen the beneficial and sound advice and also made it impossible for her to pose as young beautiful women ever). In this manner Lakshman supposedly challenged Ravana to come forward for a fight (i e provide a reason for Shri Ram to annihilate him).
