Her nose and ears gone, Supakha now assumed her monstrous and ghastly form and looked like a mountain oozing paste of red colored earth. Badly lamenting she rushed to meet her brothers Khar and Dushan (literal meaning of these names is ‘villainous’ and ‘faulted’) and said, “cursed is your strength and valor, Brothers.”

The brothers then asked her what the matter was and she explained it all to them. Taking note of situation the two demons summoned their men to collect and form an army. In response to the call all the groups of demons rushed and presented a scene like dark mountains had taken wings while advancing. Their shapes were varied and their vehicles were of different types besides they had different kind of arms also and were too numerous to count.

They kept Supanakha in front who looked unpropitious due to her ears and nose now absent from her face. Many bad omens started to take place which usually makes one dread the coming time but this army .of demons did not pay heed because now they were under vice-like hold of death. They were making high pitched sounds and were jumping high to touch skies which made the brave ones among them happy.

Some gave out call to capture the two brothers, Ram and Lakshman, alive, some others wanted them killed and some called for abduction of Sita from them. The atmosphere now had become dusty and Shri Ram therefore could know that the army of deadly demons was now converging to fight and informed Lakshman too. Shri Ram then asked him to move inside the cave over the mountain taking Sita along for safety and asked him to remain alert all the while. Lakshman respecting the command of the Lord left from there duly equipped with his bow and arrows. Short while later Shri Ram saw that a group of fighters had come close and He smilingly strung His invincible and strong bow.

With His bow now ready for action and His matted hair locks knotted over head Shri Ram, it looked as if on the mountain of emerald two snakes were ready to encounter the lighting from heavens. With quiver tied to waist His long arms now arranged the arrow on the bow for striking. The Lord now looked towards the horizon as Lion, the king of animals, looks in direction of the herd of elephants.

Shouting and shrieking, the brave among enemy came close as the demons surround the rising sun thinking that sun had no support (it is mentioned in scriptures that rising sun is attacked by demons and when the worshipers sprinkle water they disappear) but were to be surprised.

(What we learn here is that Vairagya (dispassion) can save Bhakti when under attack by certain vile tendencies but only so long as it does not fight with them rather seeks to withdraw into a shell; this is why Lord Shri Ram asked Lakshman to go and hide in a cave. These tendencies can be identified and countered only by the Lord through His long and strong arms using weapon that can destroy, to keep Vairagya and Bhakti safe; Shri Ram’s readiness to fight the army of Khar and Dooshan should be seen in this light. Vairagya protects Bhakti, Bhakti maintains continuous remembrance of Lord and Lord in turn takes care of those subtle numerous tendencies which might harm Bhakti and Vairagya.)

We have now covered up to Doha 18 of Aranya kand.

Bhavani Shankar ki Jai!
Shri Jankivallabho Vijayatey!
Sant Samaj Ko Pranam!
Goswami Tulidas Ki Jai!
