This is further to Doha 20 of Aranya kand in Ramcharit Manas of Tulsidas which we covered in the last post.
When Shri Ram established his victory over the enemy in the battle ground, the gods, ordinary people as well as Munis had some sense of relief and became free from fear of attacks by demons. Lakshman also returned back along with Bhagwati Sita and while he bowed at the feet of the Lord he was brought close to heart by the Lord. When Sita looked at the charming and soft dark body of Shri Ram her eyes expressed her unworldly affection in substantial measure.
Staying at Panchavati, the leader of Raghus Shri Ram did many acts which were aimed at pleasing the gods and the Munis. When Supanakha watched total destruction of Khar and Dooshan and their army, she went straight to Ravan to alert him and prod him to be ready to wage a war himself against Shri Ram and Lakshman because now they were a threat to Ravan too. Displaying her anger in a big way she said to Ravan, “you sleep all day and night after drinking and you have forgotten to take stock of situation now prevailing in the area under your control and neither have worry about your monetary resource that might get dried up being unaware of the enemy who have advanced right up to your head.”
Supanakha then assumed role of a philosophical guide reminding Ravan what he was supposed to know as a knowledgeable person and said, “the state can only be run well following a sound policy, Dharmik activities can go on and related obligations can be discharged only when there is enough of money. The noble deeds do not carry beneficial effect unless they be performed for happiness of Lord Hari and without surrendering to Him. Similarly it is point less to spend time and effort in acquiring knowledge and studying intensely if discretion and wisdom do not come with it.
“Those engaged in spiritual practices get spoiled due to keeping bad company and due to thinking of cheap pleasures, a king loses his kingdom on account of receiving wrong advice from his ministers, false ego makes one forget what he learned over time, habit of drinking makes one shameless and immodest, relationship of love can’t be maintained without showing humility and softness in behavior and arrogance results in loss of skills, all this happens fast and surely, I have heard this from wise people.
“An enemy, an affliction or disease, a little fire, a sin, a master and a snake are never to be taken lightly, it might be cause of a big harm.”
Uttering these words Supanakha began to lament and cry making big noise (for a dramatic effect). She then fell to the ground right in the middle of assembly weeping profusely in different ways and said to Ravan, the one with ten shoulders, that while he is alive should she face such a bad time (i e be defaced at hand of the enemy).
(The people with ugly intentions might know all that is knowable but they fail to apply it for right kind of benefit. They act deceitfully without any good for others at heart, even for their own near and dear ones, to obtain what they wish and to take revenge etc. They have much to preach but much less to follow themselves. The principles that Supanakha enunciated are worth their weight in gold but Khar, Duushan, and Supanakha herself practically did every thing reverse of these sound principles and Ravan would do the same.)
We have now covered up to Doha 21 of Aranya Kand.
