This is further to Doha 21 of Aranya Kand in Ramcharit Manas of tulsidas which we covered in the last post.

The dramatics presented by Supankha made the members in the assembly of Ravan rise up with concern and anguish; they picked her by catching her arm and tried to comfort with brotherly advice. Ravan, the King of Lanka, then prompted her to tell what had happened with her, who had removed her nose and ears. Supankha then began to explain, “They are sons of Dashrath, the king of Awadh, they are like lions in human form and have come to the forest for gaming. But I now really realize their real intention which is to make the world devoid of the night-wandering demons. Relying on the strength of their arms, O My Ten Headed Brother, the Munis now roam about fearlessly in the forest.

“They might look very young in age but are no less powerful than death itself; they have utmost patience and are expert archers, they also have mastered many skills. These two brothers have immeasurable strength and unmatched glory. They are now engaged in killing the vile and giving relief and pleasure to gods and the Munis (she meant to say that while Ravan rejoices in tormenting the gods and Munis, they are doing the opposite so that he sees them as his own enemy, more than being responsible for her own disgrace).

“The one whose name is ‘Ram’ is accompanied by a charming woman; the creator has used a heap of beauty in decorating her which has put her in category that can make beauty of a million Ratis (Rati, wife of Kamdev-the god of love, known for beauty) look small. It is his (Ram’s) younger brother who chopped my nose and ears, listen carefully, they did it to laugh at me and make me an object of ridicule who is none other but your own sister (in this manner she tried to instill in Ravan a desire for a beautiful woman and also connect  him with the ridicule that she had had to face).

“Khar and Dooshan made big noise knowing this plight of mine but they killed their entire army in a matter of minutes and then killed Khar, Dooshan and Trishira too.”

Listening the account of events presented by Supankha, Ravan had burning sensation in his physical body as well as his other subtle bodies (Ravan’s physical, mental, intellectual and emotional self etc all were now charged with sense of irritation, Supanakha had so presented it that he does not escape from taking her revenge which Ravan might have ignored for the selfish people do not care much for even their close people but are guided by lust, greed, fear and egoistic hurt etc).

Ravan then said some soothing words to Supanakha and consoled her by recounting his various strengths and went to his palace to retire for the night but the nasty kind of thoughts did not let him have a sound sleep.

We have now covered up to Doha 22 of Aranya Kand.
