This is further to Doha 24 of Aranya Kand in Ramcharit Manas of Tulsi which we covered in the last post.

The ten headed demon Ravan who had now run out of luck told in detailed what had happened to Mareech but with a tinge of pride (while what had been done to Khar and Dooshan should have sobered him as Khar and Dooshan had been as powerful as he himself by his own admission). He then asked Mareech. “you may now appear disguised as a deer to mislead as you know this art very well; I want to steal the woman belonging to the king’s family (i e Sita).”

In turn Mareech responded by saying, “Listen, Ravan, you have ten heads hence are supposed to listen by them all, in the form of a human also Shri Ram is the same very Lord of all beings whether moving or non-moving. It is never right to pick up fight with Him or see him as an enemy. Best is to live as long He wants us to live and be happy when He wants us to cease living. I have first hand experience; Shri Ram had been entrusted by Muni Vishwamitra to keep safe his Yagnas and Havans, I as usual went there to make disturbance and was hit by a blunt arrow which landed me in this far away place in a second (Mareech meant that Shri Ram could have very well killed him but saw it fit to land me here alive, so life and death happen as per His will). I therefore say to you that it is not wise or beneficial to be His enemy. I became like an insect caught by Bhringa (a winged insect of larger size) who keeps his prey confined and now I see the two brother here and there most of the time. Taat (elder brother), even if they be just humans, they are too strong and brave; by challenging them you are never going to have your way.

“Just give a thought to the fact that Shri Ram killed Tadaka and Subahu; then He broke the bow of Shiv (the preferred deity of Ravan), later as per your own information they have killed Khar and Dooshan. Would you still think that it can be a human who such great prowess and immeasurable strength.”

We have now covered up to Doha 25 of Aranya kand.
