This is further to Doha 33 of Aranya Kand in Ramcharit Manas of Tulsidas which we covered in the last post.

Shri Ram further told Kabandh, “A Vipra (an enlightened Brahmin) is worthy of honor and respect even when he is cursing, hitting or angrily uttering harsh words (as even in this manner he would be ensuring some good of people); even if you find him lacking in civility, decency or without any skills or other generally expected qualities, a Vipra deserves to be treated in a dignified manner while a Shudra (uninitiated and uncultured person who hasn’t had the company of saintly people) is not be treated like a Vipra even if he be having good qualities, be expert and skilled or be thoroughly knowledgeable (because Vipra would have tendencies that would not bring harm to society while Shudra might stray and bring harm to society under some unbearable circumstance or after getting upset about some thing unlikable to him or due to not being able to digest the honor bestowed on him).”

This is how Shri Ram made Kabandh aware of his Dharma in a manner that he could appreciate; Shri Ram also liked him for his devotion at His own feet (for those who have love for feet of Shri Ram pick up a piece of good advice easily). Kabandh, up on realizing his own true self (that he belonged to a society of higher people with divinity i e of Gandharvas and not to what he was reduced to) left for quarters higher in skies but only after bowing down at the lotus feet of Raghupati Shri Ram.

After helping Kabandh come out of living a cursed life, Lord Shri Ram, the one who is abundantly generous by nature, stepped in side the Ashram (hermitage) of Shabari (a women belonging to a forest tribe); Shabari noted that Shri Ram had come to visit her abode. She was now reminded of the words of her Guru (Matang Rishi) and also could really understand what he had meant to convey which enabled her to now immensely like, adore and love Shri Ram (Rishi Matang was pleased with service rendered to him by Shabari and while leaving the ashram he entrusted the ashram to the care of Shabari and told her to keep cleaning and decorating the path leading to it with flowers daily as one day the Lord will come to visit the place and had also given her idea what He would look like).

Shabari found the two brothers, one of dark hue and the other fair in complexion, standing right before her who had eyes like lotus and had long arms, over their heads the locks of hair were arranged like crown and they had beautiful garland of flowers found in forests; Shabari promptly fell to cling their feet. She was now overtaken with emotions of love and in this condition she could not utter a word from mouth. She could only touch her head to their feet over and over again.

Shabari later went to fetch water and washed their feet respectfully and then led them to sit over a decent seat. After they settled in her ashram, she offered to Shri Ram very juicy fruits and other eatables which Shri Ram with great interest while appreciating the taste time and again (here Shabari seems to have not offered the fruits to Lakshman whose body language might have signaled that he would not appreciate what she had to offer; the fruits had juice and Lakshman as a dry and dispassionate person did not have the capacity to naturally appreciate the things giving pleasure; the Lord however never fails to appreciate the offerings of the devotees).

We have now covered up to Doha 34 of Aranya Kand.
