We covered up to Doha 34 of Aranya Kand in Ramcharit Manas of Tulsidas in the last post and this is further to it.

Shabari stood before Shri Ram with her hands folded and palms joined; having had a good look at charming persona of Lord Shri Ram, she felt a big rush of sentiments and love in her heart for him. This was a big occasion and she wanted to sing praises of Lord but found herself insufficient for it and could just exclaim, “in what manner should I sing rightly in Your honor, my caste is very low and personally I am dim-witted, in this way I am lower than the low and being a woman extremely low, on top of it I have a dull mind, O Destroyer of Sins.”

Listening to Shabari’s sense of inferiority due to birth, lack of opportunities and proper cultivation, Raghupati Shri Ram told her with view to lift up her spirit, “O Bhamini (an address for a lady of elite class), listen, I only value the relationship of Bhakti (devotion). Order of caste, the lineage, the religious or social status and even the wealth, power and size of family etc as also the skills and expertise of a person who is without a profound sense of devotion mean as little as a cloud that has no water to rain i e it is merely a worthless collection of smoke. I will now tell the nine ways that lead to devotion; you carefully listen and then let them be imprinted on your mind (so that you never have to think little of yourself ever).”

Shri Ram then explained the nine ways of devotion in this way,”the first of the ways of devotion is to keep company of saints and Sadhus, the second is to keep interest alive in my Kathas (stories of avatars of the Lord).

“To serve the lotus feet of Guru without a trace of ego forms the third way. The fourth is that My qualities are openly mentioned and discussed as per one’s understanding without any misrepresentation (i e one should not pose to know what he has not understood as otherwise his doubts will not possibly be cleared by the Guru or the saints).”

(This should remove any kind of mental restraint felt by any one standing at any level of status, knowledge, power or wisdom at connecting with the Lord and stregthen devotion towards Him.)

We have now covered up to Doha 35 of Aranya Kand.
