We covered up to Doha 2 of Sundar Kand in Ramcharit Manas of Tulsidas in the last post and this is further to it.

There used dwell in the ocean an evil spirit capable of catching, by employing some tricks, the birds flying across sky while remaining in depth of ocean. All those creatures up in the sky were caught through their reflection in water by her as soon as it noted it making them incapcitated to fly any further and devour them. She employed same trick in case of Hanuman as soon as she sighted his reflection but the wise monkey could immediately detect what he was up against. Brave son of wind-god immediately dived and killed it and Hanuman with help of his stable mind could soon make it across the ocean successfully.

(Many times some shadowy but evil characters who otherwise have no direct connection but still have tendencies to kill the effort of those who are engaged any important expedition just for their vile pleasure. They praise them profusely for some initial successes when they are with in ear shot and distract them. It is important to kill such tendencies in the very first opportunity without engaging with them.)

Up on reaching the other end of the ocean, Hanuman found himself in a forest and observed that it was charming and the humming bees were busy gathering money there. The trees of many varieties were laden with fruits and flowers and were very appealing; the animals and birds also had attraction about them. With no further in interest in what he saw (though for a money there was every thing that could have kept it there longer), Hanuman selected a big mountain standing in front and climbed it without a trace of fear in mind (while in an alien territory one has to remain free of fear where it has to be necessarily explored for determination of further action). Lord Shiv told Parvati, “it has nothing to do with the special power the money had; here he simply relied on the God’s glory, will and grace because he knew that He only has power to control the death and fail its design.”

while on top of the mountain Hanuman saw the whole spread of Lanka; its fortification was remarkable and extraordinary. It was surrounded by ocean and by high walls which shined to spread light all around due to being coated with gold.

The golden walls were studded with shining jewels and the whole place inside was thickly populated. The whole inner city had lanes, cross roads, bazaars and divisions of many kind and was beautifully constructed. There were elephants, horses, mules and host of soldiers on foot and innumerable chariots were there too. The demons in many forms and dresses roamed about in groups and the army also had huge presence, all of it hard to describe.

Big gardens and small parks, ponds and wells etc, all very charming and could be seen there. Humans, Nagas, gods (in captivity) were to be seen there as well the daughters of Gandharvas (the celestial singers) having beauty that could attract even Mnunis’ hearts were present. At other places the big bodied wrestlers were making noises about their might and grit. They were engaged in fight in various arenas defying each other.

Many brave and able bodied soldiers were there to guard the city in all corners with special attention and skills. The demons could be seen eating flesh of buffaloes, humans, cows, donkeys and goats (i e the people there had no discretion about what to eat). Tulsidas says that he has just given a brief account of their activities, what is important is that all these demons would be losing life at the Teerth of volley of arrows Raghuveer Shri Ram and thereby achieve state of liberation i e the final beatitude.

दो0-पुर रखवारे देखि बहु कपि मन कीन्ह बिचार।
अति लघु रूप धरौं निसि नगर करौं पइसार।।3।।

Observing the activities of the defenders of the city, Hanuman, the money, reflected and thought, “it would be best for me to assume a very small form and try to enter in the city only during the hours of night (although it is not right to enter someone’s place without announcing and particularly not in the night but its not unethical to enter the house of a thief in this manner for unearthing what he he stole and concealed).”

(Sinhika represents Tamasik Maya (the delusion born of stupor and interest for vile type of pleasures. It is a great impediment in progress and never helpful; hence Hanuman straight away killed it and passed this test too.)

we have now covered up to Doha 3 of Sundar Kand.
