We covered up to Doha 36 of Sundar Kand in Ramcharit Manas of Tulsidas in the last post and this is further to it.

Ravan, the fool, heard what Mandodari said employing his ears (at least displaying an apparent courtesy but without minding what she said) and laughed in line with his reputation of being high-headed person and brushed her off by saying, “truly a woman has a timid and fearful temperament that she fears for some mishap even at an auspicious moment and suffers from weakness of heart and mind. If the army of monkeys does invade, it will only be the food for the demons enhancing their life. Fearing whom the guardians placed in all quarters for protection by gods shiver, the consorts of the same one should live in fear of something or someone makes me laugh in a big way.”

Immediately afterwards Ravan embraced Mandodari smilingly showing great affection for her to please her and left to attend his court. Back in the palace Mandodari worried intensely because she now felt that Brahma, the creator, had turned against her husband (as he had ignored even a possibility that was becoming a certainty).

When Ravan got settled in his throne in the court, he received information that a whole army had assembled on the other shore across the ocean. He then routinely asked his ministers and lieutenants for their considered advice; they in turn just said in a light mood, “have no qualms, remain upbeat; you won over the gods and rascals too without getting fatigued, what then an army of humans and monkeys holds a threat or should be taken note of.”

Ravan seemed to have forgotten the cardinal principle that if a minister, a doctor or a Guru happen to speak to please the master being in his fear or for some gain or favor for themselves, it destroys the empire, the body and the Dharma very quickly (Ravan used to keep his advisers in fear for any opinion that did not confirm his own as well as used to reward for speaking what he liked; he will be destroyed in all three ways shortly for this attitude).

We have now covered up to Doha 37 of Sundar Kand.
