Ravan, the king of Lanka, though worried and sad,  wished to know many things from monkey hence asked, “O Monkey, who are you, under whose authority did you destroy the orchard and the plantation. Have you never had occasion to hear about me; I find you totally dumb and very careless and unconcerned. What wrong had my people committed that you killed them. O Fool, just tell if you did not have fear for your own life.”

Hanuman replied coolly, ” Listen, O Ravan, who grants the strength and ability to Maya with which she creates the universe; whose power is behind Brahma, Vishnu and Mahesh enabling them to create, sustain and destroy; with the power of whom the Seshnaag is able to balance over head the various planets including the mountains and forests; who comes taking myriad forms (as avatars) to rescue the gods from troubles and to teach tough lessons to fools like you: who broke the tough and rigid bow of Lord Shiv and in the act stole the pride  of the whole body of kings; who killed your brothers Khar, Dushan and Trishira and who killed Bali too, all of whom were known to be immensely powerful; with a fraction of whose power you have won over the entire lot of beings whether moving or stationery, I am the messenger and scout of the same one. You have abducted the beloved spouse of Him only.”

(Hanuman conveyed to Ravan that he had acted against none other than the Almighty Lord who routinely takes avatars to help gods and punish the arrogant wrong-doers like him, giving him subtle advice to mend ways as otherwise it will end in Ravan’s own annihilation too.)

Meghnad used the weapon given by Brahma against Hanuman, who fell down under its impact but ensured that his big body crushes a whole army while it falls. Meghnad then noted that the monkey had fainted and therefore he promptly tied him down in Naagpaash (in a manner that incapacitates the victim like snakes do) and carried him to his father. Isn’t it strange that by chanting whose name people have been known to drop the all kinds of bondage of the temporal world, the messenger of the same should come to be tied down in this way; it is just that the monkey allowed himself to be tied down to further the cause of the the Lord (the true servants and devotees of the Lord do not come under spell of attraction of any thing in this mundane world but many times they seem to be as vulnerable as any one else, this should not be seen as their weakness, it is just so that they fit themselves in larger scheme of things that Lord has in mind).

The news spread that that the monkey had been caught and all the demons rushed to the court of Ravan to enjoy the dramatic moments. Monkey also saw the court of the ten-headed demon which represented immense power and influence as also the riches under his command. He saw there that the guardians of the four quarters and other gods were standing there meekly with hands folded and when Ravan used to work his eyebrows they felt threatened. But the display of power and riches had little effect on the psyche of the monkey; he stood there as unruffled as would stand Garuda (the king of birds) in the midst of the serpents (which it preys on at will).

When Ravan saw the money, at first he laughed and said some demeaning words but a little while later he felt remorse that this was the same monkey who had killed his son (the Ravan who was accustomed to take every enemy and every attempt to hurt him lightly was now face to face with a possibility of dire consequence; the messenger of the Lord had reversed all that by a single act of his).

Ravan, the King of Lanka, so far confident, now became angry when he listened of the demise of his son; he then asked Meghnad, the tenacious and tough son of his, to go and confront Hanuman and instructed further saying, “O Son, you may better not kill him straight away, rather bring him tied down before me. I want to see where this monkey has come from (Ravan had never felt threatened by humans and monkeys but Hanuman had defied his conception of a monkey).”

The peerless warrior Indrajit ie Meghnad left there; he was already furious knowing that his brother had been killed by the monkey. Hanuman, the monkey, noted that this time a formidable fighter had come; grinding his teeth and roaring, Hanuman also rushed towards him holding a big tree, uprooted it from the ground. Striking with that tree Hanuman destroyed the chariot of the son of king of Lanka i e Meghnad and brought him down on the ground. Hanuman crushed also the accompanying soldiers with limbs of his own body, later he engaged himself with Meghnad. Both of them began fighting like two king elephants fight in the jungle. Hanuman then struck a forceful blow with his fist which made Meghnad go unconscious for a while. Regaining sense, Meghnad resorted to his Mayic tricks but Hanuman, born of wind, proved non-conquerable.

At last, Meghnad trained Brahmastra (the weapon given by Brahma) which made Hanuman rethink; Hanuman thought if he doesn’t respect the arrow of Brahma it will spoil the glory of Brahma (Hanuman as avatar of Lord Shiv did not want to belittle the influence of fellow member of trinity Brahma by refusing to remain unaffected by his weapon while on earth).

Once Sita gave permission to eat the fruits, bowing his head before Sita, Hanuman entered the orchard and began to eat fruits as well as damage and uproot them too as per the nature of the creed he belonged to (Hanuman might have thought to stop the supply of nourishment to demons). The host of guards who were there to protect the place were either killed by Hanuman or ran away crying for help (Hanuman must have thought to pick a fight deliberately to test their strength).

The soldiers who escaped from there informed Ravan that a big monkey had come and had destroyed the Ashok Vatika and that while eating fruits he had also uprooted the trees and many of the guards were crushed to death by him. This prompted Ravan to send many more warriors to deal with Hanuman. When Hanuman saw them coming he made big roaring sound and finished them all but some nearly dead went back crying. Ravan now took it as a challenging event and sent his own son Akshaykumar (‘akshay’ literally means indestructible) who went there accompanied by a big contingent of warriors. Hanuman confronted him holding a big tree as soon he saw Akshaykumar and after finishing him too Hanuman roared and boomed in a big way once again.

Rest of the warriors were either killed by Hanuman or were crushed to ground and smeared with dust. Only a few escaped the fury of Hanuman and informed Ravan saying, “Master, the monkey’s power is immense and matchless.”

Sita now was fully satisfied after listening to monkey’s speech which was laced with Bhakti for the Lord and mentioned His magnanimity, glory and power; she gave her blessings to Hanuman now fully aware that he was most dear to Ram, the Lord and said, “O Taat, may you posses a lot of strength and be very virtuous. O Son, may you become indestructible and immortal besides having host of good qualities and may the leader of Raghus, Shri Ram, have immense affection for you and shower graces on you.”

As soon as Hanuman listened to Sita speak the words “May you haves graces of Lord showered on you”, he became totally dependent on Lord whatever be the circumstances and lost in enjoying His love for himself. Hanuman, the monkey then put his head down at the feet of Sita time and again and spoke with folded hands, “O Mother, what I desired ever to achieve in life is now granted to me as your blessings never ever are found to be inadequate or failing.

“But, O Mother, i must tell you also that i am feeling hungry in a big way right now as i am seeing beautiful fruit hanging on the trees around (here Hanuman indicates that even the greatest of Bhaktas who mainly have hunger for spirituality, have the need to feed the body too).”

Sita then replied by saying, “O Son, the demonic soldiers of immense strength are guarding this garden of fruits (here Sita did not say that the fruits or trees belonged to the demons establishing the principle that natural resources are to be used by the needy and if someone lays claim over them it is to be resisted and revolted against).”

Hanuman took the cue and told, “O Mother, I don’t have any fear of them, if you (as the real provider of all) feel pleased within.”

Janki Sita, observing the wisdom, strength and the expertise of Hanuman, lastly told him, “O Taat, go and enjoy the sweetness of fruits but be aware to have the attention fixed at the feet of Raghupati Shri Ram in your heart (indicating that in fact its the Lord who is the real provider).”

Hanuman then went on to tell Sita, “If Shri Raghuveer Shri Ram had an inkling about your whereabouts, the king of Raghus would not have let time pass and delay happen; O Mother Janki, the dark forces of demons would not have any existence right when the sun like RanvaaNN, the arrow of Shri Ram, would appear on the horizon.

“I would have taken you along to Shri Ram right away,O Mother, alas I have don’t have permission of the Lord to do so, I tell you this swearing by Shri Ram. O Janani (biological mother, Lord’s Maya is no less than a biological mother in reality too as our bodies are created by material produced by Maya of the Lord), have patience for just a few days and Shri Raghuveer will come along with army of monkeys; He will then kill the demons and would take you back. Narad and other Munis will sing glories of the Lord in all three worlds by telling the account of His win over the demons.”

Sita was still skeptical and expressed her doubt saying, “O Son, all the monkeys would be like you only while the demons are much more powerful as soldiers. This generates doubt in my heart.” As soon as Hanuman, the monkey, heard this, he displayed his expended body which looked like a mountain of gold, looked as formidably ferocious to fight and having immense power. This convinced Sita and Hanuman, the son of wind god, then assumed his normal self and said,

“Listen O Mother, i am still an animal jumping about the tree branches and therefore i don’t have an intellect or strength to talk about; it is just so that through the power, grace and influence of the Lord’s, a tiny snake can devour a Garuda, the king of birds (its the power of the Lord behind big accomplishments by small people).”

Hanuman now began to deliver message of Shri Ram to Sita in the words of the Lord Himself; the verbatim message of Lord Shri Ram being, “In your absence Sita, all have become adverse to me. The tender leaves of young trees in the forest are like flames of fire; the nights are like the never ending and dark night of death where the moon sizzles like sun. The spread of lotuses in the forest is thorny and the clouds seem to spray heated oil when they rain. All that was comforting and pleasing has become torturous; the cool, fragrant and gently blowing air feels like hissing of a snake. It is right that one’s own pain and suffering gets diluted when made known to another but I am at a loss to find someone whom I can tell my miseries (of separation from you).

“The fact of the matter is that the extent and substance of love between you and me is only appreciated by my heart and mind (i e the reality of relationship and oneness between the Lord and the Maya that works for and under instruction of the Lord remaining totally attached to Him and drawing power from Him is difficult to be known by anyone as it is beyond description and beyond mind and intellect). That heart of mine is now with you all the time and you may therefore better enjoy and appreciate the essential flavor of the affection between us.”

As soon as Vaidehi Janki listened to the message of the Lord, she became totally engrossed and enveloped by the feeling of love and lost all body related sense. At this stage Hanuman, the monkey, asked Mother Sita,”O Mother, be patient and confident and just remember Shri Ram, the one who always gives hope and comfort to His servants and devotees. Realize and think of the greatness and strength of the Master. My words should make you lose all hopelessness and cowardice.

“The numerous demons are just like flies and insects while the arrows of Raghupati Shri Ram are like raging fire; now be assured and consider all of them burned and finished.”

(Here we may appreciate that the message of Shri Ram transported Sita in another world but even Hanuman for moment failed to appreciate that and worried as if Sita was displaying helplessness by being nervous and wished to comfort and reassure her. This indicates that the Maya and the Lord have a relationship that is hard to understand, even for the avatars of the gods.)

After Sita was convinced that whom she had in front of her was none other than a Harijan, a servant of the Lord, and now she had a lot more affection for Hanuman. Tears started flowing from her eyes and she was all the more overwhelmed. She expressed herself saying, “O Hanuman, i was drowning in the ocean of separation induced pangs but you have appeared as a ship giving me hope, Son. I now accept dependence on you, you may tell me the welfare of Shri Ram who is the enemy of Khar and the center of bliss and also of His younger brother Lakshman. Raghuraj Shri Ram, the merciful one, is known to have a very tender heart and disposition, why then He has assumed such a hard posture (that He has not so far taken trouble to rescue me).

“He has a natural inclination and that is to comfort and care for His Bhaktas and servants. Does Shri Ram, the first among Raghus, remember me sometimes. Will I ever be able to cool down my burning eyes by having an eyeful glimpse of His soft swarthy body?”

Sita then was unable to speak; her eyes were full with tears but she lastly uttered, “Ahh, it seems my Lord and master has totally forgotten me.”

Finding Sita intensely anguished for being away from Lord, Hanuman, the monkey, said politely and in soft sweet words, “Mother Sita, the Lord and His younger brother, both are well and safe but the most gracious Lord is very disturbed on account of your troubles and distress. You must not, O Mother of Mine, for a moment even think yourself as helpless and left alone; the fact is that Shri Ram loves you twice as much as you love Him (Hanuman reminded her the fact that Lord’s love for the Bhakta increases doubly in proportion to Bhakt’s love for Him).

Hanuman became very very emotional and overwhelmed immediate after he uttered words,”Now, O Mother, you must keep total faith and very patiently listen to the message of RaghuPati Shri Ram.”

Grief stricken Sita joined hands and told Trijata, “O Mother, you have become my companion in these trying times and adverse circumstances. Now help me in shedding life and find some means to do it. The separation from Lord is unbearable for me now hence bring some dry wood and prepare a pier and light it for me to clime over it. In this way prove your affection for and let me prove my love for the Lord, O Wise Lady, who has capacity to hear piercing words (of Ravan).”

Trijita listened to what Sita said, grabbed her feet and then replied, “O Sukumari (Lady of Tender Age), in hours of night it is difficult to find fire,” and left for her own abode without waiting for response (she knew that best way to deal with someone with suicidal wish is to buy time and postpone discussion on issue).

Lamenting over her condition Sita began to talk to herself saying, “Brahma, the creator, seems to have turned hostile to me, in absence of fire I can not put an end to my strife. Up above in sky there are a lot of balls of fire but none of those stars comes down to earth for me. The moon itself is burning but does not spew fire as if it has taken my fate as sealed. Ashoka (name means end of sorrow) Tree, you may at least come forward and steal my grief and justify your name. Your tender leaves bear resemblance to flame, you may therefore be source of fire and provide the solution.”

Hanuman, the monkey sitting on the tree concealed by leaves watched all that was happening there but this moment of Sita’s  acute pain of separation from Lord was equal to an age for him. Hanuman then pondered for a while and dropped the ring given by the Lord which Sita grabbed happily thinking that Ashok Tree had dropped lighted wood heeding to her request.

We covered up to Doha 10 of Sundar Kand in Ramcharit Manas of Tulsidas in the last post and this is further to it.

Among the women entrusted with job of intimidating Sita there was one called Trijata (she is believed to be daughter of Vibhishan); she happened to have affection for Lord Shri Ram’s feet and was expert in carrying out the tasks assigned to her but also had discretion and understanding of right and wrong. She called everyone’s attention and told them what she had seen in her dream. She said, “All of you must serve Sita (and not trouble her), I have seen in my dream that a monkey burnt down Lanka, all the army of demons has been killed; I have also seen Ravan, the ten-headed one, astride a pony, totally naked, head shaven and his twenty arms cut off. In this condition he was going in the direction of south (south is supposed to be the direction where Yama, the god of death, lives).”

“It seemed to me that Vibhishan had accessed to throne of Lanka and the whole city reverberated with shouts hailing Shri Ram celebrating his win with loud beating of drum. The Lord then asked for Sita to be brought to him. I declare to you all that this dream of mine is only going to be true with in a matter of days.”

(Those with spiritual strength and devotion for the Lord have inkling about the coming events, Trijata was one such person though in a wrong place.)

The words of Trijata had impact on all (as her Ajna Chakra might have been awakened which gives one power to make others follow their advice). The group of the vicious women then fell at the feet of Sita (such people hardly have courage to face danger to themselves, when their savior was to meet a total ruin, their fear made them surrender easily).

All of them left Sita and went to places of their choice but Sita thought that if she was going to be killed by that lowly barbarian after a month only then this period of separation from Shri Ram is going to be very agonizing to her.

We have now covered up to Doha 11 of Sundar Kand.
