The two messengers faced with Ravan, asked him, “O Master, in the same manner that you have been kind in asking what we learned there, be similarly patient in the same manner and without being angry accept what we say.

“As soon as your younger brother Vibhishan met Shri Ram, he was first anointed as the king of Lanka by Shri Ram. When monkeys listened us speaking they could make out we had been sent by Ravan as spies and they tied us and gave us hard time in many ways. They were about to chop off our ears and noses when we asked them to stop in name of Shri Ram and they released us.

“Master, you wished to know about the strength of army of Shri Ram but the fact is that its immensity is hard to describe even by deploying a million mouths. It consists of many hued monkeys and bears who have very dreadful faces and are enormous in sizes.

“The one who had burned down our city and who had killed your son too, is in fact one of the weaker kind among the monkeys. The warriors of great prowess have different names and posses might of innumerable elephants and have large bodies.

“To recount a few by name they are Dwivid, Mayank,Neel, Nal, Angad, Gad, Vikata, Dadhimukh, Kehari, Nisatth, Satth as well as Jamvant (the bear) who is himself powerful in a big way (all these names represent the qualities they possess).”

(Shuk and the other, displaying virtue of a good emissary did not keep any detail from telling and also did not mince words in telling what lay in the interest of Ravan but in a polite and genuine way.)

The messengers of Ravan bow down before Lakshman and left for Lanka as soon as they got letter and other instructions from him; they kept recounting with appreciation the whole sequence of events. They reached Lanka while singing praises of Shri Ram all along the way. Coming to the court of Ravan they put their head at the feet of Ravan merely to observe protocol; Ravan in turned smiled and asked what message they brought. Getting no instant answer he asked again, “O Shuk (name of one of the messengers), you seem to be unduly quiet, what’s wrong, are you OK? Also tell the news regarding Vibhishan who seems to have closed distance between his death and himself. The fool decided to leave Lanka while he was enjoying as its ruler; now he will only have the same fate as that of an insect, a bug, in the pile of grain (to be eventually crushed).

“Then also give me details of the army of bears and monkeys who on account of call of the lord of death have assembled there. It is in fact the soft-heartedness of the poor ocean itself that it has kept them alive (by coming in middle of me and them). Lastly also tell about the ascetic brothers who might be feeling miserably on account of fear of mine plaguing their hearts.

“Did you have occasion to meet them or they have returned back after listening to accounts of my fame (as a strong and well equipped person). You seem to be aghast at something (Ravan could not make out that their behavior was different because they had had the glimpse of the Lord, it was hard for them to reconcile between this master who was totally embroiled in selfish pursuits and the other Master, the Supreme Lord of Universe and His magnificence and simplicity, His protective attitude and friendliness).

In the end Ravan came to point of his interest and asked, “why don’t you tell all about the strength and prowess at command of the enemy camp?”

The secret agents of Ravan were so overwhelmed with love for Shri Ram for His ingrained nature (of amiability and acceptance) that they began to sing His praises openly, forgetting that they were in disguised form (this is a natural effect for someone who has had occasion to look at the Lord and His true nature; such a one then sheds all pretenses, a necessity for earning Lord’s love for himself). The monkeys now could make out that they weren’t from among them but were from enemy’s camp hence they tied them up and took in front of Sugreev, their king.

Sugreev in line with his policy told them to maim the demons and send back. The monkeys went overboard listening to Sugreev’s word and took the demons around and began to hit them in different ways. The prisoners gave mercy call but it remained unheeded; lastly they said, “who ever wants to cut our nose and ears, we appeal to him in name of Shri Ram, the King of Kaushala, not to do so.” When Lakshman heard Shri Ram’s name being taken by them, he asked them to come near and smiled, they now deserved to be shown kindness and mercy hence they were set free once again. Since they were now to go back to Ravan, Lakshman gave them a letter to be handed to Ravan with words,”O enemy of your own family, read this message from Lakshman.”

Lakshman further told them, “you may also tell the dumbfounded fool verbally my message of compassion and generosity that he must see us immediately and return Sita otherwise his death is imminent.”

Shri Ram, by way of appreciation, told Vibhishan, “Friend, you have spoken of a right way to resolve a problem (of this big magnitude where ecological issues are involved, a silent conversation with mother nature may surely help), I intend do like wise provided such is the providence out there to help us.”

This counsel coming from Vibhishan wasn’t liked by Lakshman and he was upset listening to Shri Ram’s words of approval for such a thing. Lakshman told Shri Ram, “Master, should one rely on providence and fate, can they be relied up on. I think You must dry up the ocean by getting angry in Your heart (You are the real Lord of universe and merely Your being angry will shake up the creation forcing ocean to dry).

“It is for the cowardly and weak to look for help from luck etc, for them it might be the sole consolation; also some who are lazy and inactive by nature have been known to wish and call for luck, it is not for us to wait like this.”

Raghuveer Shri Ram instantly smiled at the sort of reaction coming from Lakshman and said, “We will do as you suggest, just have some patience in your heart.” This is how the Lord placated the anxiety of younger brother and pacified him; Raghuraj Shri Ram then went near the ocean. Shri Ram first bowed down reverentially before the ocean (acknowledging its greatness) and then spread a sheet of grass on the shore and set over it (when someone waits for a while to find a solution for a big problem, the word spreads and those who have some knowledge or expertise get time to contact him; rushing in such matters is not advisable, it may turn those who will be affected eventually in to enemies which is never a desirable thing in far away places).

On the other side, Ravan sent his spies to follow Vibhishan as soon as he left Lanka. These sleuths, disguised as monkeys, watched the going on in Shri Ram’s camp from close quarters and appreciated the virtues of the Lord in their hearts and particularly His love for the shelter-seekers.

Surely those who worship other than such a Lord (as Shri Ram is) are not humans but are like animals who do have tails and horns. That Vibhishan was accepted as His own devotee and servant by the Lord, such kindness as part of His nature was liked by the monkeys.

Omniscient and omnipresent, appearing in all forms but without being only those forms and being totally unconcerned with or uninterested in what happens or doesn’t happen who took an avatar in human form for the destruction of the race of demons as an upholder of Niti (right rules and right path), such Shri Ram, the Lord, once again began to speak, “Listen, O Sugreev, king of monkeys and listen O Vibhishan, king of Lanka, both of you are brave and now is the time to discuss how to get across this deep ocean which is a challenge in itself; this is home to alligators, snakes and various forms of fishes, it’s depth is unfathomable therefore poses every kind of difficulty in crossing over.”

Lankesh Vibhishan suggested by saying, “O Raghunayak, please listen, though Your arrow is capable to dry millions of such oceans yet the prevalent norm calls for going to the ocean itself and ask for means to cross it. Lord, the ocean is Your Kulguru (the family elder)* hence would most willingly tell us a good way to achieve our goal. In this manner our entire army of monkeys and bears will be able to go across the ocean with out much effort.”

(Sagar was an ancestor of Shri Ram, he had dug up the earth which up on getting filled with water came to be known as Saagar (the ocean); here we must appreciate that such natural entities as ocean etc should not be seen as inanimate objects to be dealt with as pleased. Here they should be seen as living systems that must be explored for our needs in a way that would acceptable to them. Vibhishan here proved to be having quality of a good king who cares to preserves environment as first priority.)

After giving Vibhishan valuable insight in to what the Lord looks for in a Bhakta, Shri Ram assured him saying, “Listen, O King of Lanka (suggesting Vibhishan that this was now fait accompli), you have all the virtues that I look for in a Bhakta; it is for this reason that you are most dear to Me (telling him that he wasn’t dear for he might extend help in fight with Ravan but for the virtues he has, in spirituality there is no give and take and Lord loves the virtuous devotees always).”

The words of Shri Ram made the groups of monkey shout slogans hailing abundantly merciful Lord. Vibhishan took Lord’s speech no lesser than nectar to be drunk by ears and never get satiated with it. He grabbed the lotus feet of the Lord time and again and he could not hold the flow of love for Shri Ram generated in his heart; the following words came out of his mouth perforce, “Listen O Lord of the whole creation, consisting of both the moving and stationery, animate and inanimate, You are the savior of the humble suitors, You are the one to know what goes on in every ones’ heart and mind. I had some traces of lust and other mundane desires lurking in my psyche but all of it is now totally washed away by the stream of love for the Lord. Now O kind Lord, be generous and entitle me to have the same Bhakti unto You that makes, one pure and pristine, and which is always most comforting and pleasing to the heart of the Lord Shiv.”

“So be it”, said the Shri Ram, the Lord, who is always steadfast and committed in the battlefield (i e always ready to erase the vile thoughts from the hearts of the humble seekers and servants). He then promptly asked for bringing water of the ocean; with it in hand Lord said, “My Friend, though you no more have any wishes or desires yet my Darshan (sight) never fails in granting whatever the world has to offer.” With these words Shri Ram anointed Vibhishan as the king by putting a Tilak (a mark on the forehead). When this happened there, the flowers rained from heavens above.
दो0-रावन क्रोध अनल निज स्वास समीर प्रचंड।
जरत बिभीषनु राखेउ दीन्हेहु राजु अखंड।।49(क)।।

This is how Lord saved Vibhishan who was burning on account of fire of anger of Ravan and was therefore breathing heavy due to fear and gave him the kingdom of Lanka without threats from any quarters (because he had now protection of Lord Himself; what comes to us a grace of the Lord, no body can steal it from us).
जो संपति सिव रावनहि दीन्हि दिएँ दस माथ।I
सोइ संपदा बिभीषनहि सकुचि दीन्ह रघुनाथ।।49(ख)।।

This wealth (including the kingdom of Lanka) was grated by Lord Shiv to Ravan (as devotee) after Ravan offered in sacrifice his own head ten times (i e had committed to serve Lord Shiv with all five sense organs and five organs of actions as Guru and as preferred deity) and the same belonged to Vibhishan now which Raghunath Shri Ram handed him with slight hesitation that it is not a sufficient reward for the divine virtues possessed by Vibhibhan.

After Vibhishan finished pouring out his sentiments before Shri Ram, the Lord, it was turn of the Lord to speak and He said, “Listen, Friend, I would tell you what My real nature is and it is well known to Kakbhushundi (the saint in form of a crow), Lord Shambhu (Shankar) and His consort Parvati, the daughter of the Giriraj (the king of mountains).”

(The Lord here meant to say that His real nature is known to saints of whatever kind and form, to the first among the gods as well as to Parvati who is of very stable mind being the daughter of king of mountains.)

Lord further said, “If any one from among the humans, comes straight to Me seeking My refuge due to some fear in his mind though he might have been someone who has acted against the whole body of moving and stationery beings i e has committed such an impardonable sin but after finally shedding tendencies of being vane, obsessive and deceitful and dropping all interest in craftiness, I promptly make him like a Sadhu (a saint and a seeker).

“He should also pick up the threads of affection and love tying him down to mother, father, brother, son and companion as also of attachment tying to body, wealth, house and the lovable relatives and use them to tie his heart and mind solidly with my feet by converting those lose threads in to a strong rope.

“He should begin to look at everything and all persons with evenness without any of his own desires distorting the view; he should stop being ecstatic or remorseful (on account of happenings in the world around him) and should stop loading his heart and mind with fear on account of his past deeds or retribution from any quarter.

“Such a noble person stays in My heart in the same way as a greedy person remains absorbed in thought of wealth and possessions. Hence noble and saintly people like yourself are very dear to Me, in fact it is for such people that I take a body and descend as an avatar and not for any other purpose of My own.

“Those who worship Me as the Lord with attributes, remain engaged in welfare of others and observe routine resting on solid foundation of righteousness and straight policy besides having love for the feet of the Dwijas i e twice born Brahmins, are like My Prana (the force that keeps me ticking for otherwise I am neutral and without likes and dislikes of my own as the abstract Lord of Universe).”

Vibhishan continued to pour out his feeling before the Lord (which also suggests that he was a thorough thinker and had learned from right sources), “O Raghunath Shri Ram, the villainous group known as Lobha (greed), Moha (misplaced interest), Matsar (jealousy and grudge), Mada (arrogance and overbearance), and Mana (false pride) can stay in ones’ heart only till You don’t remain there, duly equipped with Your arrows, bow and the quiver tied to Your waist (i e in readiness to kill the villainous tendencies mentioned earlier).

“The ownership in form of mine-ness is that profoundly dark night which makes for the delight of owls like Raga (attachment) and Dwesha (aversion) and they can make devotee’s heart their home only till the time the sun of Your glories and virtues does shine in his heart, O Lord.

“I am now perfectly safe and all my fears have gone, after I have had occasion to observe Your lotus feet, O Shri Ram. You are that gracious Lord who by His favors and kindness obliges a sufferer making him escape the three pronged heat generated on account of worldly living.

“I would admit to being a demon with very vile character who never ever could practice righteous behavior or maintain a benefic living style (Vinhishan did not transfer blame on conditions and pressures). Now the same Lord who eludes to oblige the Munis by His appearance in their meditative state, has brought me close to heart with pleasure and willingness.

“What better fate can I expect, it is the maximum, and Ram, You are very committed in extending Your kindness and are in fact concentration of the divine pleasures; haven’t i had the opportunity to look at Your lotus like two feet which are served by none other than Brahma (the creator) and Shiv (the principal among gods).

Shri Ram noted the manner in which Vibhishan had lastly lay prostrate before him in spirit of total surrender and the Lord promptly got up with great delight in His heart (Lord always feels very happy when a Bhakta comes to Him; He happily saves the Bhakta from the afflictions of the worldly living should he come without pretensions).

The Lord appreciated what Vibhishan had said with total humility and related his woeful state of mind and therefore He extended His long arms to bring Vibhishan close to his bosom. After Lord met him to his entire satisfaction Himself and Lakshman too, He made Vibhishan sit close to Himself and said such words that would steal fear from heart of a Bhakta i e Vibhishan, “Tell, O King of Lanka (Lord addressed him as king because a as King of Lanka he would have no fear of Ravan and gave him idea about what was in store), your welfare and of your family, I know that you are placed in wrong surroundings. You have to live in the midst of villainous and crooked people, how then you are able to discharge obligations that your Dharma demands (Lord knew that the inability of noble people in carrying out Dharmic activities and responsibilities is the biggest discomforting feature of their stay in wrong places and among wrong people), O Friend.

“I know your ways of living and your manner totally (nothing misses the Lord’s attention ever), you are very much an expert in matters of policy and don’t like wrong approach regarding any thing at all. O Taat, to live in hell is better than having to spend time in company of the vile and wicked, may Vidhata forsake prescribing such hard luck to any one (Lord meant than company of bad people is sure to spoil the good people too and away from bad company one has chance to be liberated at some time).”

Vibhishan, up on listening to comforting words of the Lord, said, “Now its all well after having seen your feet, O Raghuraj Shri Ram, particularly when You have looked at me mercifully considering me as your own servant and devotee.

“The fact of the matter is that Jivas have no scope of being well and safe and have no chance of having rest and peace in their hearts until the time they remember and worship Ram (i e You who is the Lord Supreme Himself), leaving aside the desires and cravings which in reality are the abode of sorrows and troubles (i e the source of all conflict and troubles flows from mundane desires which never end and never get satisfied; leave apart the covetous and lustful desires, the ordinary desires also do not stop streaming up one after the other, fulfillment doesn’t break this cycle hence the mind is disturb always however when the mind is engaged in thought of Ram, the Lord, the generation of new desires slows and even stops).

The monkeys returned with Vibhishan keeping him in front of themselves to present him before Shri Ram, the merciful lord of Raghus. The two brother, Shri Ram and Lakshman, saw them coming and Vibhishan too saw the two brothers from distance who were delightful in appearance and gave immense pleasure to his eyes. Later Vibhishan could concentrate on persona of the Lord Shri Ram who looked very charming to him, almost the very home for beauty to stay permanently; sight of Shri Ram made Vibhishan stunned and stilled and he forgot to bat his eyelashes for a while.

He was able to notice the long arms of the Lord, the eyes red lotus like, the body dark-hued and He looked like the one who could remove all kind of fears from mind of the asylum seeker. Coming closure, Vibhishan could see that Shri Ram’s shoulders were like lion’s and His chest region broad and shapely; he found the face of the Lord captivating and displaying beauty of innumerable Kaamdevs (cupids).

Now Vibhishan had his eyes tearful and his body very much thrilled; controlling himself Vibhishan patiently uttered these soft words, “Lord, I am brother of Dashanan Ravan. i have been born in the family of demons, O Savior of gods. it is only natural for me to have body that has prominence of Tamas (the Guna which represents stupor and lethargy) and inclination for vile things along with interest in sinning, very much like an owl loves darkness (Vibhishan did not wish to say any thing even remote untrue displaying the first plus point of a person truthfully surrendering and seeking shelter).

“But I have heard of your famous glories with my own ears (in this way Vibhishan made it known that he had been enjoying company of saintly people otherwise who else will speak of virtues of the Lord and His kindness) that the Lord is the one who can smash the hold of world which generates fear in one’s heart. Raghupati Shri Ram, kindly save me, help me, You are the one to end troubles and distresses. I know that only those find real pleasure, real peace and comforts of all kinds who come under Your shelter and protection.”
